The Man’s Guide to Buying Cute Lingerie

Lingerie: The most misunderstood clothing in the universe. Women have plenty of their own issues to work out when it comes to lingerie, from body image problems to outdated concepts that put lingerie only on sluts and strippers – but when it comes to issues involving lingerie, men take the cake easily.

On the one hand, unbuttoning your date or girlfriend or wife and discovering lacy, frilly underthings that scream SEX is, for many grown men, akin to waking up Christmas morning to find a new sportscar wedges under the tree. On the other hand, the adorable boys sometimes take it upon themselves to buy their women cute lingerie – and thing often go off the rails. Here’s the quick lesson in buying lingerie for your gal without making a hash of it.

Buy for Her, Not for You

The big mistake men make when looking for cute lingerie for their girl is to picture their favourite porn movie and seek out something they saw there. While many women will use lingerie as a short-term ‛costume’ to heat up the bedroom, true lingerie is designed to be worn all day under the clothes. It needs to be comfortable and pretty.

The key: Check out what she already owns. Look for sizing info, the cut of the panties and the style of bra. Make notes. Look for something that’s in the same ballpark.

Be Sensitive

If you’re buying her underwear, for God’s sake, you must know her pretty well. That means you must know what her body issues are (she’s a girl, so obviously there are body issues of some sort). Keep these in mind. If she hates her thighs, don’t get her lingerie that emphasises them. Whatever her issues are, try to find something that hides what she normally hides and pushes up or out what she thinks of as her best feature.

Think About Colour

Men are forever buying red and pink lingerie, or sometimes black, because that’s what they think of – they also get drawn to lace and satin and bows like moths to a flame, open-mouthed and starry-eyed.

Nothing wrong with cabaret-style lingerie if she’s on board – but if it’s a surprise, stick with colours and styles she’ll be able to wear under her clothes at work. That’s the goal, because it will see her thinking of you and being with you all day long.
